Iskander missile strike destroys Patriot air defense system in Dnipropetrovsk region

Russian troops launched a missile strike using the Iskander-M operational-tactical complex against the Patriot anti-aircraft missile system (SAM) positions near the village of Ordzhonikidze in the Dnipropetrovsk region of Ukraine. As a result of the attack, key elements of the SAM were destroyed: the AN/MPQ-65 multifunctional radar station, the combat control cabin, and two launchers.

The operation was carried out based on intelligence data that confirmed the location of the Ukrainian SAM system. The Iskander-M used a ballistic missile that hit the target with high accuracy, leaving no chance for the system to be restored. The destruction of the system was a serious blow to Ukraine's air defense in the region, given that the Patriot is considered one of the most modern SAM systems supplied by the United States.

Earlier, on October 10, 2024, Newsweek reported on a similar Iskander strike on a Patriot in the Dnipropetrovsk region, near the village of Pashenaya Balka. At that time, Russia also announced the destruction of an AN/MPQ-65 radar and two launchers, although the Ukrainian side claimed that the system was only damaged. According to Military Watch Magazine, since the beginning of the conflict, Ukraine has received about five Patriot systems from the United States and allies, but their number is decreasing due to the high risk of destruction by Russian missiles. The Patriot air defense system remains a priority target for Russia, since it is capable of effectively countering ballistic missiles and aircraft.

The Ukrainian side has not yet confirmed the destruction of the air defense system.
