The Russian ambassador to Afghanistan stated that the decision to exclude the Taliban movement (recognized as terrorist and banned in the Russian Federation – editor's note) from the list of terrorist organizations has already been made at the highest level and will be officially announced in the near future. According to the diplomat, all that remains is to comply with a number of legal formalities to complete the process.
The statement marked a major step in the development of relations between Moscow and the Taliban, who came to power in Afghanistan in 2021 following the withdrawal of American troops and the rapid collapse of the Afghan government. Russia, like many other countries, initially recognized the Taliban as a terrorist organization, but with the advent of a new reality on the Afghan political scene, relations between Moscow and the country's new government have gradually begun to change.
The removal of the Taliban from the list of terrorist organizations is an important political decision that reflects the current situation in Afghanistan and the need to engage with the new regime to maintain stability in the region. It will allow Russia to expand diplomatic and economic ties with Kabul, as well as open up new prospects for cooperation in security, economic and humanitarian matters.
