Russia withdraws naval forces from Syria's Tartus port

Russia has apparently begun withdrawing its naval forces from the Syrian port of Tartus, which has served as a key strategic base on the Mediterranean coast for years, Clash report reports. On December 2, 2024, the Russian support vessel Yelnya reportedly left Tartus, while two frigates, another support vessel, and a submarine were also recorded departing. These movements may indicate Russia's intention to reduce its presence in this strategically important area.

The port of Tartus serves as Russia’s main foothold in the region. The Russian base was significantly expanded and modernized during the Syrian civil war, and since the outbreak of the conflict in Ukraine in 2022, its role has become even more important in supporting operations in the Black Sea and deterring NATO activity in the eastern Mediterranean. Tartus has served as a base for Russian ships carrying out both logistical tasks and military operations on behalf of the Syrian government and Russia.

The departure of the ships and submarine from Tartus may indicate a change in Moscow's military strategy in the region. Although Russia has maintained an active presence at the base in recent years, the current situation has raised serious tensions.

It should be noted that the Russian side has not officially commented on such information.
