On May 18, 2025, Russia detained for the first time the oil tanker Green Admire, which left the Estonian port of Sillamae and was sailing through Russian territorial waters along an agreed route. This was reported by the Estonian Foreign Ministry, specifying that the Liberian-flagged vessel, owned by the Greek company Aegean Shipping Enterprises, was heading to Rotterdam with a cargo of oil products. The detention occurred four days after an incident in which the Estonian Navy attempted to stop an unmarked tanker heading to the Russian port of Primorsk through Estonian waters. This was reported by ERR and Bloomberg, citing a statement from the Estonian Foreign Ministry.
The incident with Green Admire happened on Sunday at around 13:00 local time in the Gulf of Finland. According to the Estonian Foreign Ministry, the tanker was following a route approved by an agreement between Russia, Estonia and Finland, which regulates safe shipping in the region, taking into account shallow waters and environmental risks. Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna called Russia's actions "unpredictable" and said that NATO allies had been notified of the incident. The Russian side has not yet commented on the detention.
