The Russian Federation initiated a meeting of the UN Security Council in connection with the Israeli air attack on the Iranian consulate in Damascus, Syria. The meeting is scheduled for April 2 and will begin at 22:00 Moscow time. This was announced by Dmitry Polyansky, Deputy Permanent Representative of Russia to the UN.
The reason for the request was Iran's request to the UN Security Council to condemn the Israeli strike on its diplomatic mission in Syria, which they consider a threat to regional peace and security. Polyansky noted that the meeting was requested as a follow-up to the letter from Iran, emphasizing the importance of discussing this incident at the international level. However, Israel does not acknowledge its attack.
The attack, which occurred on April 1, led to the complete destruction of the Iranian consulate building in Damascus, while both senior military personnel and diplomats were in the building at the time of the attack. The Iranian side condemned Israel's actions and called on Washington to take responsibility for what happened, considering the United States an accomplice in this incident.
Russia, in turn, expressed strong condemnation of the attack on the diplomatic mission, emphasizing the unacceptability of such actions and their impact on exacerbating tensions in the region. The UN Security Council will have to consider the circumstances of the incident and discuss possible measures to resolve the situation.
