Russians will be forcibly deported from Latvia if they do not pass the language exam to extend the residence permit - media

New rules have come into force in Latvia for extending residence permits for Russian citizens, which can lead to forced deportation if the requirements are not met. According to the new legislation, all residence permits of Russian citizens remain valid only until September 1, and in order to extend their status, Russians need to pass a language exam.

If a Russian citizen does not provide a document confirming knowledge of the Latvian language before the specified date, he may be forced to leave the country. According to representatives of the State Border Guard, decisions on forced expulsion will be taken in cases where people do not voluntarily comply with the requirements to leave.

The Latvian government notes that the new rules are related to the desire to support the Latvian language and culture in the country. However, Russians who live and work in Latvia express dissatisfaction with the new rules, considering them discriminatory.

At the same time, some experts note that such tough measures may affect Russian-Latvian relations. Last year, for example, Russia took action against Latvia related to criminal cases against Russians in the country, which led to tensions between the two countries.
