Russian and Syrian aircraft carried out joint attacks on the positions of militants of the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS, recognized as terrorist and banned in Russia – Avia.pro note) group in the provinces of Aleppo and Idlib. As reported by Avia.pro source with reference to Reuters, the strikes were carried out on objects used by the militants to coordinate actions and store weapons.
It is noted that the Russian side confirmed the participation of its aircraft in the operation and announced plans to increase military support for Damascus. Over the next 72 hours, additional assistance will be sent to Syria, including equipment and weapons, to strengthen the positions of the Syrian army in key regions.
The joint operation was a response to the increased activity of opposition groups, which stepped up attacks on government positions. In a few days, HTS militants captured a number of strategically important facilities and an area of over 2000 square kilometers.
Aleppo remains one of the key cities where fierce clashes continue. Despite the fact that it was returned to the control of the Syrian army in 2016 with the support of Russia and Iran, the militants already control about 40% of its territory.
