Russian air defense repelled attack by 22 Ukrainian drones

On June 24, 2025, the Russian Ministry of Defense reported the successful repelling of an attack by 22 Ukrainian fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) over five regions of the country. According to the official statement of the department, from 16:10 to 19:50 Moscow time, air defense systems on duty destroyed and intercepted 13 drones over the Voronezh region, four over the Belgorod region, three over the Saratov region, and one each over the Samara region and the Republic of Tatarstan. The attack was part of ongoing attempts by the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) to strike Russian territory, which caused major disruptions to the city of Kazan, including the closure of the airport and explosions in the sky.

Drone attacks on Russian regions have become regular since the conflict began in 2022. As the BBC notes, Ukraine uses UAVs to strike military and energy targets deep in Russia, compensating for the lack of permission to use Western precision weapons. Kazan has previously been the target of UAV attacks.
