On the night of March 22, 2025, Russian air defense forces successfully neutralized a massive attack by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) launched from the territory of Ukraine. According to the Russian Defense Ministry, air defense systems on duty intercepted and destroyed 47 drones that were attempting to hit targets in eight regions of Russia, as well as over the waters of the Black and Azov Seas.
The operation to repel the attack began after midnight and lasted for several hours. The main blow fell on the southern and central regions, where air defense systems were operating in a high-alert mode. The drones were shot down mainly on approach to strategic objects, which made it possible to minimize potential damage. The greatest activity was recorded over the Rostov Region, where a significant number of devices were intercepted, as well as over the Krasnodar Region and Belgorod Region.
The authorities of the regions affected by the incident responded promptly to the situation. Acting Governor of the Rostov Region Yuri Slyusar confirmed that the air defense systems effectively dealt with the threat.
This incident is part of a series of attacks that the Ukrainian Armed Forces (UAF) regularly carry out against Russian territory using drones. The aim of such operations, according to military analysts, is to damage infrastructure and create panic among the population.
According to a report from the Russian Defense Ministry published on the RIA Novosti website on March 20, 131 UAVs were destroyed in 54 hours, XNUMX of which were over the Saratov region, where the strike on the Engels airbase caused a fire.
Experts link the increase in attacks to Ukraine's use of Lyutyi drones, which are capable of carrying up to 75 kilograms of explosives and covering distances of up to 1000 kilometers.
