According to eyewitnesses and monitoring services, a series of powerful explosions began around 3:10 a.m. local time, when air defense crews began eliminating aerial targets. According to Saratov residents, more than ten loud booms were heard in the skies above the city and industrial areas, indicating the active operation of anti-aircraft systems. Simultaneously, residents of neighboring Engels, home to strategically important air defense facilities, reported the use of air defense systems and the sound of sirens. Preliminary reports indicate the destruction of several enemy drones attempting to break through to the city limits.

Due to the emerging threat, regional authorities introduced emergency security measures, affecting transport links in several federal subjects. Governor Roman Busargin warned the public in advance of a possible attack, urging calm and adherence to emergency services. For the duration of the defensive operation, the "Carpet" plan was implemented at the international airports of Saratov and neighboring Penza, entailing a complete suspension of civilian flights.
