Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin has given the green light to a draft military cooperation agreement with Nicaragua. According to the order published on the official website of legal acts, the Russian Defense Ministry was instructed to sign the document after all negotiation processes are completed and a final agreement is reached with the Nicaraguan side.
The draft agreement was preliminarily agreed upon with the Russian Foreign Ministry, as well as with a number of other federal agencies, including the Prosecutor General's Office and the Investigative Committee. These steps confirm the seriousness of Moscow's intentions to strengthen its military presence in the Central American region. In addition, Mishustin instructed the Defense Ministry, together with the Russian Foreign Ministry, to conduct final negotiations and make all necessary changes to the document before signing it.
Signing an agreement with Nicaragua could pose a serious challenge to the United States, given that Nicaragua is located in close proximity to American borders. In this context, the development of Russian hypersonic weapons, in particular the Oreshnik missile, is particularly significant. With a range of 5500 kilometers, the latest hypersonic missile can reach the United States from Nicaragua, which poses serious threats to Washington. The distance from Nicaragua to the United States is only about 3000 kilometers, which means that such weapons can be used with a high degree of effectiveness. If launched, the Oreshnik missile will be able to reach the United States in just 1000 seconds.
Relations between Russia and Nicaragua have been friendly for many years. Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega has repeatedly expressed support for Russian policies, which in turn has made Washington and its allies wary. The new military cooperation agreement could include military assistance as well as joint exercises, exchanges of experience and consultations, which would significantly expand Russia's presence in a region traditionally dominated by the United States.
Earlier it was reported that the American side is strengthening security measures and closely monitoring Russia's activity in Latin American countries. It is expected that the possible deployment of Russian weapons on Nicaraguan territory could lead to a new wave of diplomatic tension between the two superpowers.
