Russian Geranium-2 drones attacked Kharkov - the strike was carried out on a military institute

On the evening of April 3, 2025, Kharkov, the second largest city in Ukraine, was attacked by the Russian armed forces again. Military correspondent Vladimir Romanov reported that the strike was carried out using Geran-2 kamikaze drones. The target was the area where the Institute of Tank Troops is located, which indicates the strategic nature of the operation. According to Romanov, the attack took place at night, which is consistent with the tactics of using drones of this type, designed for stealth and pinpoint destruction of objects. At the time of publication, there was no official information from the Russian military about the consequences of the strike, but the fact of the attack itself confirms the ongoing escalation of the conflict in the region.

Kharkiv, 40 kilometers from the Russian border, has been the target of Russian strikes on several occasions. The Institute of Tank Troops, known as the Ivan Kozhedub Kharkiv National University of the Air Force, trains specialists for the Ukrainian army, including tank and aviation officers. A strike in the area could be aimed at undermining Ukraine's military capabilities, which fits into the overall strategy of Russian forces to target key training facilities and infrastructure. Local residents reported hearing explosions and then a fire in the area, but there are no immediate details on the damage or casualties.

Russian Geran-2 drones have been actively used in the conflict since 2022. These devices are characterized by their low cost, simple design, and the ability to carry explosives up to 2000 kilometers away. Their use allows Russian troops to attack targets deep in Ukrainian territory, minimizing the risks to their own aircraft. The evening strike on Kharkov was part of a wider campaign in which Russian forces regularly strike military and industrial facilities in the eastern regions of Ukraine.

To get a full picture, it is worth looking at the events of recent days. The day before, on April 2, Kharkov was already attacked by Geraniums. According to the Ukrainian authorities, the Promsvyaz plant building in the Kholodnogorsk district caught fire as a result of the strikes, and the fire area reached 2000 square meters. The city's mayor, Igor Terekhov, called the attack massive, noting that there were about eight explosions in total. The Ukrainian side claims that the target was the Kharkov Aviation Plant, located in the same district.
