Today, Russian airspace control equipment detected a group air target approaching the state border of the Russian Federation over the Barents Sea. To identify it and prevent airspace violations, MiG-29 and MiG-31 fighters from the air defense forces on duty were scrambled into the sky.
Russian fighter crews identified the aerial target as a pair of US Air Force B-52H strategic bombers. As Russian fighters approached, American planes changed course and made a turn away from the Russian state border. Thanks to the prompt actions of Russian pilots, airspace violation was prevented.
After successfully completing the mission, the Russian fighters returned safely to their airfields. The Russian Ministry of Defense emphasized that the flight of Russian aircraft was carried out in strict accordance with international rules for the use of airspace over neutral waters and in compliance with all safety measures.
