Russian MiG-31 became "hunters" for ballistic missiles

The deployment of Russian MiG-31s in the Arctic was associated with the transformation of fighters into "hunters" for ballistic missiles.

The appearance at a military airfield on the Novaya Zemlya archipelago of a group of Russian MiG-31 interceptor fighters turned out to be associated with the intentions of the Russian defense department to use these combat aircraft to intercept ballistic missiles. According to the data presented, the crews of the Russian MiG-31 will regularly practice the tasks of intercepting ballistic missiles.

In addition to protecting the Arctic and northern Russian borders, the Russian MiG-31 interceptor aircraft will also serve as ballistic missile interceptors throughout Russia.

"These aircraft can operate at high altitudes, so they are able to effectively deal with ballistic missiles."- said the ex-commander of the 4th Army of the Air Force and Air Defense, Lieutenant General Valery Gorbenko.

Experts note that with the advent of hypersonic air-to-air missiles, the possibilities for intercepting ballistic missiles will increase manifold, however, in the future, these tasks will already be carried out by a new generation of fighters - the MiG-41.
