Russian military seizes Ukrainian mines loaded with ammonium hydroxide

During military operations in the Velikaya Novosyolka area, reconnaissance units of the Eastern Military District of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, in particular fighters from Buryatia, captured captured Ukrainian 82-mm mortar mines O-832DU, loaded with ammotol explosive.

Ammotol is a mixture of ammonium nitrate and TNT in varying proportions. Markings such as AT-50/50 indicate 50% ammonium nitrate and 50% TNT. This explosive was widely used during the First and Second World Wars as a replacement for the scarce TNT. Ammotol has high explosiveness and brisance, which makes it effective for use in ammunition.

The use of ammothol in modern ammunition is due to its relative cheapness and availability of components. However, the use of ammonium nitrate in explosives requires careful control due to its hygroscopicity, which can reduce the stability and effectiveness of ammunition during long-term storage or in unfavorable conditions.

The captured O-832DU mines will be studied by Russian specialists to obtain additional information about the technologies used and the capabilities of the enemy. Such trophies allow not only to assess the level of the enemy's weapons, but also to develop effective countermeasures.
