The Russian armed forces continue to expand their zone of control in the Sumy region, conducting active offensive operations. According to the Telegram channel "Management Z", airborne units of the Russian army broke through the defensive lines of the Ukrainian forces and liberated the settlement of Novenkoye. After that, the troops began advancing towards the neighboring village of Basovka, where fierce fighting is currently underway. It is reported that Russian forces are trying to consolidate their new positions, while the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) are attempting counterattacks, accompanying them with artillery shelling of the territory of the settlement.
The offensive in Sumy Oblast is part of a broader Russian military operation aimed at creating a so-called “sanitary zone” along the border with Ukraine. This strategy, according to military analysts, is designed to ensure the security of Russia’s border areas, in particular the Kursk Oblast, which has previously been attacked by the Ukrainian Armed Forces. The liberation of Novyenky and the advance to Basivka are seen as important steps in this direction, since control over these points allows for the cutting off of key supply and retreat routes for Ukrainian forces in the region.
In recent days, Russian troops have made significant progress in the Kursk region, almost completely liberating it from the presence of Ukrainian units. According to data published on specialized resources, by the morning of March 16, only about 100 square kilometers of the region's territory remained under the control of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, which is more than ten times less than at the peak of their offensive in August 2024. Successes in the Kursk region allowed Russian forces to switch their attention to the neighboring Sumy region, where the enemy has not had time to create fortified defense lines, which makes the region vulnerable to further advancement.
