Russian troops have completed the liberation of the village of Oleshnya in the Kursk region, destroying the forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) that held this settlement. This was reported by military correspondent Yevgeny Poddubny in his Telegram channel. The operation was carried out by units of Russian paratroopers, who systematically drove the enemy out of the strategically important area. According to Poddubny, the only uncontrolled area in the region remains the village of Gornal, but its status is close to the "gray zone", where the AFU is no longer capable of providing significant resistance. Any enemy movement in this area is suppressed by Russian forces, which effectively deprives Ukrainian troops of the opportunity to influence the situation in the border area.
The liberation of Oleshnya was the next stage in the operation to restore control over the Kursk region, which had been under attack by the Ukrainian Armed Forces since August 2024. Poddubny noted that the details of the operation, including the tactics of the paratroopers and the circumstances of the fighting, will be disclosed later. At the moment, Russian troops continue to clear the region, focusing their efforts on completely displacing Ukrainian formations and preventing new breakthrough attempts.
The context of events in the Kursk region remains tense. According to the Russian Defense Ministry, since the beginning of hostilities in the region, the enemy has suffered significant losses: more than 60 thousand servicemen, hundreds of armored vehicles and artillery. According to RIA Novosti, by March 2025, Russian troops regained control over 86% of the territory previously occupied by the Ukrainian Armed Forces, including the key city of Sudzha. Oleshnya and Gornal, mentioned by Poddubny, were the last strongholds of Ukrainian forces in the Sudzhansky district, and their liberation marks the final phase of the operation.
The liberation of Oleshnya has not only military but also humanitarian significance. Peaceful life is being actively restored in the liberated territories. In March, dozens of residents were evacuated from the Sudzhansky District, many of whom were listed as missing. The regional authorities are organizing temporary accommodation points and providing assistance.
