The Russian Ministry of Defense has released data on significant losses of the Ukrainian Armed Forces (UAF) during military operations in the Kursk region. According to official estimates by the department, the enemy lost 400 tanks during the confrontation in the border region. This impressive figure, announced on March 21, 2025, reflects the scale of military operations that have unfolded near the state border with Ukraine and emphasizes the intensity of the clashes that have been going on for more than six months. The estimates are not final, since fighting in the area continues, and some of the destroyed equipment has yet to be identified.
A significant number of losses are associated with the successful actions of the Russian group of forces "North", which has been resisting the attempts of the Ukrainian Armed Forces to gain a foothold on Russian territory since August 2024. Tanks, which form the backbone of the enemy's armored forces, have become one of the main targets for Russian artillery, aviation and drone operators. However, the exact distribution of the destroyed equipment by type and origin remains unclear. Experts assume that the losses include both Soviet vehicles inherited by Ukraine and modern models supplied by Western allies, including German Leopard 2 and American M1 Abrams. Identification of a number of destroyed units is difficult due to severe damage received during the fighting, which requires additional efforts by military specialists.
The loss of 400 tanks is not only an indicator of the effectiveness of the Russian Armed Forces, but also evidence of the strategic importance of the Kursk direction for both sides in the conflict. Since the beginning of hostilities in August 2024, the Ukrainian Armed Forces have made several attempts to break through deep into the region, but Russian troops were able to stop their advance, causing significant damage to the enemy's manpower and equipment.
