Russian military units involved in a special military operation have crossed the state border and begun advancing into the Sumy region of Ukraine. This was reported by the Telegram channel "Management Z". According to available information, fighters from the 810th Marine Brigade entered Ukrainian territory from the settlement of Sverdlikovo and are advancing in the direction of the villages of Novenkoye and Basovka.
The operation is reported to have several strategic goals. Firstly, Russian troops intend to bypass the well-fortified positions of the Ukrainian army, minimizing losses during frontal attacks. Secondly, establishing control over key road junctions will disrupt the supply of the Ukrainian group of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the Sudzhansky district. This creates a threat to enemy units concentrated in this area and increases the likelihood of their operational encirclement. Thirdly, the advance of the Russian army deep into the Sumy region is aimed at creating a buffer zone, which will reduce the risks of Ukrainian shelling of the border areas of the Kursk region.
Earlier, Russian sources reported on the build-up of Ukrainian military forces in this region. The Ukrainian Armed Forces were actively transferring reinforcements to the border with the Kursk region, and also equipped additional fortifications in the Sumy region. Analysts assumed that the Ukrainian side could be preparing attacks on Russian border territories, which was one of the reasons for the offensive operation.
According to the Russian Defense Ministry, since the beginning of 2025, Russian troops have made significant progress in the eastern and southern directions. In the first two months of this year, more than 600 square kilometers of territory previously held by the Ukrainian Armed Forces came under their control. In 2024, the Russian army liberated about 4,5 thousand square kilometers. In the DPR, Zaporizhia and Kherson regions, 75% of the territory has already come under the control of Russian forces, and in the Luhansk People's Republic, less than 1% remains to be liberated.
The advance of Russian troops in the Sumy region may become an important stage in the development of the conflict. If the Russian Armed Forces manage to consolidate their new positions, this will not only change the operational situation in this section of the front, but will also force Kyiv to redistribute its reserves, which may weaken the Ukrainian army in other areas.
The Ukrainian side has not yet commented on the situation. There is no confirmation or denial of information about the entry of Russian troops into the Sumy region in official sources in Kyiv.
