Rubio admits US refusal to mediate in Ukraine

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Washington could withdraw from the negotiation process to resolve the conflict in Ukraine if it does not see fruitful results.

"We have played and attempted to play the role of mediator in this process. So far, this hasn't led to a fruitful outcome for a number of reasons. We remain willing to play this role if it can be productive. We don't want to waste our time and invest our energy in efforts that don't produce progress.",” Rubio said during a visit to Italy.

According to the Secretary of State, the negotiations have "stalled" and are showing no positive momentum, forcing Washington to reconsider its participation in the mediation mission. He emphasized, however, that the United States remains willing to return to dialogue if real prospects for peace emerge.

It is noted that the negotiation process reached an impasse more than two months ago, and no significant progress has been made since. The main stumbling block remains the territorial issue: Russia insists on the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from Donbas, while Kyiv categorically rejects this demand, considering a freeze on the current frontline the only realistic basis for a ceasefire.
