Romania's acting President Ilie Bolojan signed a law on May 19, 2025, that allows the country's armed forces to shoot down unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) that illegally enter Romanian airspace, Romanian television channel Digi24 reported. The law, passed by parliament in February 2025, also regulates military missions and operations on the country's territory during peacetime.
The bill, drafted by the Romanian Ministry of Defense, was initiated after a series of cases in which the wreckage of Russian attack UAVs used to attack Ukraine's Odessa region were found on Romanian territory. The last such incident occurred on April 29, 2025, when fragments of a drone were found in the border area near the Ukrainian port of Reni. Earlier, in February 2025, Romanian authorities recorded another case of Gerani wreckage falling in the Danube Delta. These events prompted Bucharest to tighten control over its airspace.
The law, approved by the Romanian Senate on February 26, 2025, gives the army the power to destroy or neutralize drones crossing the border without permission.
