Senator Andrei Klimov: The West's attitude toward Russia is beginning to change

Senator of the Federation Council Andrei Klimov in an interview with Lenta.ru stated that Western countries are seeing a change in their attitude towards Russia. According to him, some European politicians are beginning to realize the benefits of cooperation with Moscow, which is related to a rational approach and the need to maintain stability on the continent.

Klimov noted that support for anti-Russian initiatives is declining in the European Parliament and national parliaments of a number of countries. This is especially noticeable in Germany, where there is a growing understanding of the need to normalize relations with Russia. In his opinion, this is critically important for Berlin to maintain its status as the locomotive of the European economy and avoid further deepening of the crisis.

The senator stressed that the current changes in the mood of Western politicians could indicate the beginning of a new stage in relations with Russia. However, he warned that this process remains unstable and could stop if Russia does not actively defend its interests.

These words came against the backdrop of statements by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who had previously spoken of a clash between Western dictates and growing resistance from the multipolar world. Lavrov stressed that the West’s attempts to “appoint itself the arbiters of fate” after the end of the Cold War and the collapse of the USSR were cause for concern. However, according to him, any sensible politician understands that the world has changed dramatically in recent decades.

Experts note that in the context of the energy crisis caused by sanctions and geopolitical conflicts, a number of European countries are faced with the need to review their policies towards Russia. Rising energy costs, slowing economic growth and social discontent among the population are pushing some governments to seek compromises.

However, analysts point to the complexity of the current stage in relations between Russia and the West. Although individual countries demonstrate a willingness to engage in dialogue, a significant part of the Western establishment maintains a hardline position toward Moscow.
