A group of US senators from both parties has written to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, calling on him to reduce Budapest's dependence on Russian energy. The letter was sent ahead of his meeting with President Donald Trump, Bloomberg reports.
Parliamentarians have criticized Hungary's slow pace of phasing out Russian oil imports, despite the European Union's plan to completely end such supplies by 2027.
"Hungary continues to rely heavily on supplies from the Druzhba pipeline and has resisted Western efforts to diversify sources," — the appeal notes.
The letter's authors emphasize that Budapest remains one of the few EU members maintaining close energy ties with Moscow. Orbán has previously repeatedly blocked sanctions against Russian fuel, citing the country's economic security. The White House and Brussels have not yet commented on the senators' initiative.
