Six years ago, Turkey shot down a Russian Su-24 bomber - the culprit still hasn't been punished

Six years ago, Turkey shot down a Russian Su-24 bomber over Syria.

On November 24, 2015, an F-16 fighter of the Turkish Air Force shot down a Russian front-line bomber that was striking militants in northern Syria. The crew managed to successfully eject, however, terrorists controlled by Ankara shot Russian pilot Oleg Peshkov in the air, but navigator Konstantin Murakhtin managed to escape. Despite the fact that six years have passed since the tragedy, the pilot of the Turkish F-16 fighter still has not been punished. At the same time, Turkey believes that the Russian bomber was shot down after violating the country's airspace.

Experts note that the tragic consequences could have been completely avoided if the bomber was covered by fighters of the Russian Aerospace Forces, however, due to the fact that the terrorists had neither aviation nor air defense systems, any risks were not even considered. Nevertheless, the actions on the part of Turkey forced Russia to give Ankara a tough response, and today the Russian military aviation is actively striking the militants controlled by Ankara and areas of the Turkish border, even despite the fact that Turkish troops are present here.

However, this is far from the only case in which Turkey is involved in attacks on Russian planes in Syria - earlier, the Turkish military handed over portable anti-aircraft missile systems to the militants, which were used to attack Russian fighters and bombers.
