Sweden plans to transfer Gripen fighter jets to Ukraine within a year

Sweden is considering the possibility of providing Ukraine with Gripen fighter jets to strengthen its defense capabilities. This topic has been discussed since the middle of last year in the context of the growing debate surrounding the deployment of F-16 fighters. Sweden's centre-right administration has laid the groundwork for a potential airlift to Ukraine after European partners said they would send Lockheed Martin F-16 fighter jets to Kyiv.

Swedish Defense Minister Paul Jonsson instructed the country's military leadership to assess the potential impact of various forms of assistance on Ukraine's capabilities, in particular, options from export to the transfer of Gripen aircraft. Stefan Ungert, an air defense specialist at the Swedish Defense Research Agency, believes it is only a matter of time before the Gripen is deployed.

If Sweden agrees to send Gripens, experts estimate up to a year before they appear in the skies of Ukraine. This is due to the necessary training for pilots and engineers to work with unfamiliar Gripen mechanisms.
