Syrian rebels have captured a Soviet Uragan multiple launch rocket system (MLRS), capable of hitting targets up to 36 kilometers away. This type of weapon, characterized by its large caliber, poses a serious threat to both the Syrian army and strategic facilities in the region, including the Russian Khmeimim airbase. The distance to it is about 38 kilometers, which puts it in the potential zone of destruction.
The MLRS system that fell into the hands of the militants is equipped with a full ammunition load of 16 missiles, which makes it ready for immediate use. According to military experts, the militants can use the Uragan to strike not only at Syrian army targets, but also at military convoys, which will significantly complicate government operations.
The capture of such a powerful weapon system raises questions about the ability of the Syrian army and its allies to prevent further strengthening of the militants. With rebel groups actively increasing their arsenal, the existing infrastructure becomes vulnerable. The Russian Khmeimim air base, a key support facility for the Syrian army, could be at risk if the militants decide to use the Uragan to strike it.
