In Idlib province, near the city of Saraqib, Syrian militants have captured an Iranian military base. The facility, previously used by Tehran-backed forces, has become the target of a major offensive by opposition groups. According to local sources, the militants are in full control of the base, which poses a serious threat to further actions by Iranian and Syrian government forces in the region.
The takeover followed a swift attack in which the militants used heavy weapons and artillery support. Iranian troops stationed at the base were forced to retreat to avoid significant losses. Ammunition and equipment were reportedly left behind at the base, which is now in the possession of the opposition.
This success of the militants strengthens their position in a strategically important area. Saraqib is located at the intersection of key transport routes that connect the provinces of Idlib and Aleppo, and control over this area provides an opportunity to expand the influence of the opposition in the south of Idlib.
Iran, a key ally of the Syrian government, has already signaled its readiness to take steps to regain control of the lost territory, and Tehran says its support for Damascus will remain unchanged.
