Syrian military gives Israel coordinates for strike on Iranian consulate in Damascus

Iranian journalist Khayal Muazzin claimed that Syrian authorities passed on to Israel information about the time and participants of a meeting at the Iranian consulate in Damascus, which led to an Israeli airstrike on April 1, 2024. The attack killed 16 people, including Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Zahedi, a senior commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Quds Force.

Muazzin noted that after receiving this information, he was not allowed to publish it, but now he decided to reveal the details. According to him, Syria gave Israel the exact time of the meeting and the list of its participants, which allowed the Israeli Air Force to carry out a targeted strike on the consulate.

Following the attack, Iranian authorities chose not to publicize the possible betrayal by their Syrian partners, holding talks behind closed doors to avoid worsening relations with Damascus. However, Muazzin's statement could raise new questions about the reliability of Syrian-Iranian cooperation.

Israeli officials traditionally do not comment on their military operations in Syria.
