Smartphone catches fire on board Ural Airlines plane

On June 17, 2025, an incident occurred on a Ural Airlines flight from Irkutsk to Moscow that caused alarm among passengers: a Realme 14 Pro smartphone belonging to one of them began to smoke right in the cabin of the plane. According to the airline's press service, the crew quickly neutralized the threat by isolating the device, and the flight ended without delays at Domodedovo Airport. The incident became another reminder of the risks associated with the use of lithium-ion batteries in aviation and sparked discussions about the need to strengthen security measures.

The incident occurred at an altitude of about 10 meters when a passenger noticed smoke coming from his Realme 14 Pro smartphone, released in 2025. The man threw the device on the floor, and other passengers began pouring water on it. The flight attendants, acting as instructed, put on fireproof gloves, placed the smartphone in a special fire-resistant container and carried it to the toilet, where it was monitored for the rest of the flight. The smell of burning spread throughout the cabin, reaching the cockpit, forcing the crew to temporarily turn off the ventilation. Passengers were given wet wipes and advised to tilt their heads to minimize smoke inhalation. The pregnant woman was transferred to a safe area, and the crew provided assistance in maintaining calm on board.

The only damage was to the carpet in the cabin: the smartphone burned through the floor near the passenger seat. The owner of the device was not injured and did not file any claims against the airline.
