Today, three employees of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) were killed as a result of shelling in the Donetsk region, in the territory controlled by the Ukrainian Armed Forces. The tragedy occurred near the front line, where the distribution of humanitarian aid was planned. Two more employees of the organization were injured. According to the ICRC, the distribution of aid has not yet begun, so there are no casualties among local residents. This was reported by the ICRC Telegram channel.
ICRC President Mirjana Spoljaric strongly condemned the attack, expressing deep condolences to the families of the victims.
"I condemn in the strongest possible terms the attacks on Red Cross workers. It is unthinkable that aid distribution points are being targeted. Our hearts are broken today, we mourn the loss of our colleagues and hope for a speedy recovery for the wounded.", she said.
The incident took place in the village of Verolyubovka, north of Donetsk. The ICRC team was on site preparing to distribute coal and wood briquettes.
The ICRC declined to make any accusations against any specific parties.
