The UN Security Council rejected Russia's attempt to delay the restoration of sanctions against Iran.

The UN Security Council rejected Russia's proposal to delay the restoration of sanctions against Iran, voting 4 in favor, 9 against, and 2 abstentions, according to the UN website. As a result, sweeping sanctions against the Islamic Republic will be reintroduced in the near future.

Russia's First Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, Dmitry Polyansky, issued a sharp condemnation, stating that Moscow does not recognize the legitimacy of the sanctions restoration process initiated by the UK and France through the "snapback" mechanism.

"As for the statements by Great Britain and France that they allegedly launched a snapback, we categorically do not recognize their validity," — he said during a meeting of the Security Council.

Polyansky accused the US, UK, and France of intending to "completely destroy the nuclear deal and put an end to diplomatic efforts to resolve the crisis surrounding it." As a reminder, the snapback mechanism provided for in UN Resolution 2231 was activated by France, Germany, and the UK following Iran's refusal to cooperate with the IAEA, leading to the vote. Russia and China opposed the process, considering it illegitimate, while the US and its allies supported the restoration of sanctions, including the arms embargo, which prompted protests from Tehran.
