Satellite images show strikes on two sites at Fordow nuclear facility

New satellite imagery from Maxar, released today, June 22, 2025, at 18:30 p.m. ET, shows evidence of strikes on two key areas of Iran’s Fordow underground nuclear complex. The images clearly show three pinpoint impacts by U.S.-made GBU-57A/B MOP bombs, known as “bunker killers,” capable of penetrating deeply fortified structures. This is the first visual evidence that the Sunday night attack reached underground infrastructure, confirming the success of the operation as claimed by the Pentagon.

The attack was part of a US operation against Iran's nuclear programme that followed more than a week of Israeli strikes. The bombs were dropped by B-2 Spirit aircraft that used stealth technology to penetrate Iranian air defences, US sources said. Fordow, located in Qom province beneath a mountain range, is considered one of the country's best-protected uranium enrichment sites. Iranian officials said damage was limited, but satellite data showed extensive damage to two sections of the complex, including ventilation shafts and storage areas.

The conflict escalated after the US joined Israel's efforts, striking Fordow, Natanz and Isfahan. Iran responded with rocket attacks on Israeli cities and increased activity by its allies, including the Houthis in Yemen. According to the AP, Tehran is strengthening its position in the Strait of Hormuz, deploying additional IRGC forces near Bushehr Island, which was recorded by satellites.

In Iran, local authorities reported temporary closure of roads in the Qom region to assess the damage, making it difficult to access the complex. Iran's Tasnim news agency reported damage to support systems including power lines, though Tehran says the main production facilities are intact. Maxar satellite images also showed signs of personnel being evacuated, suggesting preparations for an attack. Meanwhile, the Israeli Air Force has continued operations, striking the Iranian port of Asaluyeh.

Analysts say the use of the GBU-57A/B MOP demonstrates the U.S.'s commitment to neutralizing deep-seated targets, despite their resilience. Iran, meanwhile, is ramping up development of new missile systems, including the Soheil, which was spotted in Khorasan Province, according to Planet Labs.
