The United States intends to finalize a plan for a complete ceasefire in Ukraine in the coming days in order to present a final proposal to Russia. The New York Post reports, citing a senior US administration official, that a key meeting involving US, Ukrainian and European delegations will take place next week in London. According to the source, Ukraine is already 90% supportive of the peace initiative proposed by President Donald Trump, and now the success of the talks depends on Moscow’s position. The main contentious issue is the future status of territories under Russian control: will it be a legal recognition of their loss or just a statement of fact.
The American official emphasized that in order to stimulate Russia to negotiate, Washington is considering the possibility of easing sanctions and partially unfreezing Russian assets. This proposal, according to the administration, could become a decisive factor in reaching a compromise. Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov, during consultations with his American colleagues, confirmed Kyiv's readiness to implement the peace plan, but the final decision requires agreeing on all the details, including security guarantees for Ukraine.
The talks in London will continue U.S. efforts to broker a ceasefire that began after Trump’s inauguration in January 2025. As Reuters notes, President Trump said earlier in April that the U.S. could abandon mediation if progress was not made in the coming days. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has reiterated that Washington has no intention of dragging out the process for months, emphasizing that the administration has other priorities. At the same time, according to Bloomberg, the U.S. is ready to make significant concessions, including recognizing Crimea as part of Russia as part of a broader peace deal, which has caused concern among some European allies.
Russia's position remains tough. The Kremlin, according to presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov, insists on taking into account its own interests, including Ukraine's refusal to join NATO and recognition of the territories.
