The US military, together with its allies, is developing a plan for a ground operation against the Houthis in Yemen, which should unfold from the south, east and along the coastline. This was reported by CNN, citing information received from regional and diplomatic sources. According to the publication, preparations for the offensive are already in full swing, and its goal will be to weaken the position of the movement, which continues to threaten security in the region. The main striking force in this campaign should be the troops of the Yemeni government, recognized by the international community. Let us recall that the Houthis control the capital Sanaa and part of the western coast, but their power does not extend to the entire territory of the country.
The participation of American troops in the operation, as specified by sources, will be limited. It is assumed that the United States will involve only specialists - military advisers and experts who will provide support in planning and coordinating actions. The main burden will fall on Yemeni government forces, which emphasizes Washington's desire to minimize the direct involvement of its soldiers in the ground conflict. At the same time, the role of Saudi Arabia remains in question. It is still unclear whether Riyadh will decide to send its armed forces to participate in the offensive or limit itself to air and sea support. It is expected that the operation will be coordinated, and its key element will be the liberation of the port of Hodeidah - a strategically important facility on the Red Sea. For this, it is planned to involve the naval forces of the United States and Saudi Arabia, which will provide cover from the sea and help cut off supplies to the Houthis.
The conflict in Yemen, where the Houthis are pitted against the internationally recognized government and a Saudi-led coalition, has been going on for years. American airstrikes against rebel positions have increased in recent months but have failed to significantly weaken the movement, prompting Washington to consider more radical measures, such as a ground campaign.
According to Middle East analysts, the United States held a series of consultations with Yemeni and Saudi Arabian officials in Riyadh in March 2025 to discuss details of the upcoming offensive. Experts note that the Houthis have strengthened their position in recent months thanks to arms supplies from Iran, including upgraded drones and missiles, making them a formidable adversary even for well-equipped forces. In early April, the Houthis announced the creation of a new line of defense around Hodeida in anticipation of an attack, indicating that they were aware of their enemy’s plans.
