The operation involved two nuclear-capable B-52s, three stealthy F-35s and three air superiority F-15s from the Air Self-Defense Force's 6th Wing, the Japanese Defense Ministry said.

Tokyo officials noted that this was the first US military presence in the area since the start of Chinese exercises last week. Those maneuvers included joint bomber flights from Beijing and Moscow, as well as separate carrier exercises, which prompted Japan to scramble its aircraft to intercept.
