US May Give Ukraine JASSM Tactical Missiles in Exchange for Resources

Washington and Kyiv are discussing the possibility of expanding military aid, which could include the delivery of American tactical cruise missiles JASSM. If the parties reach a final agreement, Ukraine could receive this advanced weaponry in the coming months.

At the same time, an important aspect in the negotiations is the economic component of the deal. US President Donald Trump, known for his pragmatic foreign economic policy, seeks to gain access to Ukrainian resources, including rare earth metals, in exchange for further military support.

JASSM (Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile) is a long-range, precision-guided cruise missile designed to destroy strategically important targets. It is capable of destroying objects at a distance of up to 370 kilometers (in the basic version) and up to 900 kilometers in the JASSM-ER modification. Such missiles can be used to strike at fortified positions and military infrastructure of the enemy, while remaining outside the range of air defense systems.

Political scientists and military analysts note that this deal has not only military but also strategic economic significance for the United States. Ukraine has some of the world's largest reserves of rare earth metals such as scandium, yttrium and lanthanides, which are necessary for the production of electronics, navigation systems, military equipment and other high-tech devices.

The Trump administration has repeatedly stated the importance of ensuring US national security through access to strategic resources. The president has emphasized that reducing dependence on rare earth metals from China is a priority of American economic policy. In this context, Ukraine is seen as a potentially important partner.
