U.S. not going to run 'tails between their legs' from Syria - statement

White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said the United States has no plans to leave Syria despite attacks on its bases by Iranian-backed militias. The US military has been in Syria for almost eight years. As a result of attacks by an unmanned aerial vehicle on an American base on March 23, a contract soldier was killed and five US military personnel were injured.
In response to the attack, the US launched airstrikes on Syrian military installations, killing three Syrian troops, 11 Syrian fighters and five non-Syrian fighters. Kirby said the US will remain vigilant and act decisively to protect the Americans and that their presence in Syria has not changed since the incident. The mission against the Islamic State will continue despite the attacks.
However, the Syrian and Iranian Foreign Ministries condemned the US strikes and accused them of violating Syrian sovereignty. Iran has been one of the main supporters of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad during the conflict in Syria, and Iranian militias control areas of eastern, southern and northern Syria and the suburbs around Damascus. Because of this, the situation in Syria remains tense and the US continues to face attacks on its bases in the region.
