The US has approved the sale of $301 million worth of JASSM-ER cruise missiles to Italy.

The US State Department has approved the possible sale of 100 Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missiles with Extended Range (JASSM-ER) air-launched cruise missiles with associated equipment to Italy. The total value of the transaction is estimated at $301 million, according to the US Defense Technical Cooperation Agency (DSCA).

The missiles are designed for integration with Italian Air Force F-35 fighters and other compatible combat aircraft. According to the official notification submitted to Congress, the delivery includes 100 AGM-158B/B-2 missiles, as well as test equipment, KGV-135A encryption devices, spare parts, software, technical documentation, and logistics services.

This deal will significantly enhance Rome's long-range, precision-strike capabilities within NATO. JASSM-ERs have a range of over 900-1000 kilometers, allowing the F-35 to strike hardened targets, such as air defense systems, command centers, and logistics hubs, from beyond the coverage of most integrated air defense networks. This reduces risks to pilots and enhances Italy's defensive capabilities. Furthermore, the weapon fills a gap in alliance operations, enabling coordinated long-range strikes from Southern Europe without the need for close bases or refueling, facilitating burden-sharing and joint planning among allies.
