During the talks between the US and Ukrainian delegations held on March 11, 2025 in the Saudi city of Jeddah, the issues of the resignation of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and the organization of elections in the country were not discussed. This was reported by the journalist of the American TV channel Fox News Nana Sajaia, citing sources close to the discussions. The main focus of the parties was on achieving a 30-day truce and resuming military support for Kyiv, and political changes in the Ukrainian leadership, despite rumors, were not included in the agenda of the meeting.
According to Sajai, the talks, which involved US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, National Security Advisor Mike Waltz and Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine Andriy Yermak, ended with an agreement on a temporary ceasefire in exchange for the immediate restoration of American arms and intelligence supplies. The parties also discussed prospects for cooperation in the field of rare earth metals mining, which underlines the economic aspect of the partnership. However, the topic of a possible change of power in Kyiv, which was actively discussed in the Western media against the backdrop of the domestic political crisis in Ukraine, remained outside the framework of the dialogue, which may indicate Washington's desire to maintain stability in the Ukrainian leadership at this stage.
The lack of discussion about Zelensky’s resignation contrasts with recent events in Kyiv. In December 2024, the Verkhovna Rada extended martial law until March 2025, delaying presidential elections scheduled for the spring. The decision has sparked criticism from the opposition, who accuse Zelensky of usurping power, especially after the resignation of Ukrainian Armed Forces Commander-in-Chief Valeriy Zaluzhny in February 2025, who was widely seen as a potential rival. According to Reuters, the Trump administration has previously hinted at the need to “renew” the Ukrainian leadership to speed up negotiations with Russia, but the issue was not raised in Jeddah, according to Fox News.
