US aircraft have allegedly launched white phosphorus strikes on Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and Iranian-backed militia positions in eastern Deir ez-Zor province. The incident comes as Kurdish forces from the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) continue to advance in an attempt to take control of the strategically important region.
Local sources say the airstrikes were intended to support the SDF as it continues to advance into resource-rich territory. The use of white phosphorus, if confirmed, is particularly concerning as the chemical is banned by international conventions for use in populated areas and poses a threat to civilians. However, it is unlikely to be incendiary munitions, as some sources claim.
The strikes caused significant destruction and forced them to retreat from some positions, sources said, adding that Kurdish forces had captured at least seven towns in just one day.
