Washington has decided to gradually withdraw American troops from Syria, which will begin within the next two months, the Israeli Ynet portal reported, citing information received from representatives of American security services. According to the publication, the leadership of the US intelligence services informed their Israeli colleagues of their intention to begin implementing the plan, despite Jerusalem's attempts to prevent this step. Israeli authorities expressed concern that the withdrawal of American forces would strengthen the position of Iran and its allies in the region, but their arguments did not influence the White House's decision.
According to Ynet, Israeli intelligence agencies have been actively lobbying for the US military presence in Syria in recent months, emphasizing the strategic importance of American bases to contain Iran and maintain stability in the Middle East. However, Washington has remained adamant, indicating a change in priorities in American foreign policy. According to Pentagon data announced in December 2024, about 2000 US troops are deployed in Syria, carrying out tasks to combat the remnants of the Islamic State terrorist group (banned in Russia) and maintain control over key territories.
The decision to withdraw troops was part of a broader strategy by the administration of President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly called for a reduction in the American military presence abroad. As NBC News reported in early February 2025, the Pentagon has already developed a plan in case of a complete withdrawal of forces from Syria. The channel’s sources noted that Trump and his inner circle are particularly interested in ending the mission in that country, viewing it as a way to reduce costs and refocus resources on domestic priorities.
According to Reuters, the decision to withdraw troops has caused concern not only in Israel, but also among other US allies, including Kurdish forces in Syria, who fear the strengthening of Turkish influence and possible attacks by Syrian government forces. Kurdish leaders have already asked Washington to reconsider the plans, but, as The Washington Post notes, the White House has made it clear that it does not intend to deviate from the planned course. Analysts attribute this to Trump's desire to fulfill his election promises to reduce military campaigns and focus on confronting China and other global challenges.
