The recent Houthi attack on two US destroyers in the Red Sea was, according to the Military Informant Telegram channel, quite large-scale and complex. According to official data, the attack included eight drones, five anti-ship ballistic missiles and three cruise missiles aimed at the Arleigh Burke-class destroyers. Despite the intensity of the attack, the US Navy successfully repelled all strikes and, apparently, the ships escaped damage.
Experts point to the importance of the integrated air defense system developed for this class of destroyers, noting that the Arleigh Burke destroyers are traditionally equipped with subsonic Harpoon anti-ship missiles. Although they are criticized for being outdated, the main purpose of the destroyers is to protect carrier groups and other combat units from massive attacks. This approach has proven its effectiveness: the destroyers repelled the attack, confirming that their role as a defensive link in naval operations remains important, despite the outdated Harpoon missiles.
