The United States has decided to resume deliveries to Ukraine of high-precision long-range GLSDB bombs capable of hitting targets at a distance of up to 161 kilometers. This was reported by Reuters, citing sources in the American administration. According to the publication, these munitions were specially modernized for use in the Ukrainian theater of military operations, which could increase the number of strikes.
The GLSDB (Ground-Launched Small Diameter Bomb) is a guided small-diameter bomb developed jointly by Boeing and Saab. It combines high accuracy with extended range, making it an important addition to the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ arsenal. The bomb is launched from ground launchers such as HIMARS and is equipped with a GPS navigation system, allowing it to hit targets with minimal deviation even in adverse weather conditions. The upgrades mentioned by Reuters presumably include adapting the munition to the specific missions of the Ukrainian front, including the ability to counter electronic warfare systems.
The decision to resume GLSDB deliveries was part of the Trump administration’s efforts to restore military aid to Ukraine, which was suspended in early 2025. As The Washington Post notes, the move was made after consultations with Kiev and European allies, as well as in the context of talks with Russia on a possible ceasefire. The United States had previously supplied Ukraine with GLSDBs as part of a military aid package approved in 2023, but their use was limited due to difficulties integrating them into Ukrainian systems and the need for additional training for operators.
According to Reuters, the first batches of upgraded bombs could be delivered to Ukraine as early as April 2025, which will significantly enhance the Ukrainian Armed Forces' ability to strike rear positions.
