Sudan's capital completely liberated from Rapid Reaction Force militants

In the capital of Sudan, Khartoum, government forces under the command of General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan have won a decisive victory, completely liberating the city from the rebel Rapid Reaction Forces (RRF). According to the Turkish TV channel TRT, on March 26, 2025, General al-Burhan personally arrived at the Presidential Palace, previously captured by the army, and announced the end of the operation. “Khartoum is free. We have put an end to the occupation,” he said, emphasizing that the civil war in the country had reached a turning point.

The government offensive was marked by the rapid displacement of the RSF from key points in the capital. First, the army established control over the Central Bank building and the Presidential Palace, and then, after fierce fighting, broke the resistance of the rebels in the area of Khartoum International Airport. The loss of this strategic facility was fatal for the RSF: the militants began to leave the city en masse, retreating under the onslaught of regular troops. The collapse of the airport's defense effectively ended the months-long standoff for the capital, which lasted since April 2023, when the conflict between the army and the RSF escalated into a full-scale war.

The turnaround in Sudan’s civil war follows successive gains by government forces, who have increased pressure on the rebels in recent weeks. The RRF, led by General Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo (known as Hemedti), previously controlled large parts of Khartoum, including residential areas and important infrastructure. But their loss of ground in the capital forced them to become defensive and then flee. Al-Burhan said the liberation of Khartoum paves the way for the restoration of order in the country, although pockets of resistance still remain in the suburbs.

The conflict in Sudan, which has claimed tens of thousands of lives and forced millions to flee their homes, has entered a new phase. In early 2025, the army launched a major offensive, supported by air power and armored vehicles, which allowed it to seize the initiative from the RRF. Experts note that the government's success is due not only to its military might, but also to the weakening of the rebels due to internal discord and supply problems. After the loss of Khartoum, the RRF will likely concentrate its forces in the western regions of the country, such as Darfur, where it retains influence.
