Stoltenberg Offers Ukraine to Join NATO Without Losing Territories

Former NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, in an interview with the Financial Times, expressed his opinion on possible ways for Ukraine to join the Alliance even without regaining control over the lost territory. According to him, the North Atlantic Alliance can offer Kyiv security guarantees that will apply only to those territories that are under the control of the Ukrainian government.

Stoltenberg noted that this does not exclude the possibility of Ukraine joining NATO.

“There are ways to solve this problem if there is a line up to which security guarantees will apply,” - declared Stoltenberg.

He also cited the example of Japan, to which the US provided security guarantees that did not cover the Kuril Islands, or West Germany, which joined NATO during the period of the division of Germany.

At the same time, the former Secretary General emphasized that the issue of Ukraine’s security and its possible entry into NATO requires a cautious approach.

"No parallels are 100% correct",” Stoltenberg clarified.

He also stressed that the main thing is the presence of political will to resolve such issues.

Jens Stoltenberg believes that a line should be defined for Ukraine, up to which Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty will apply, according to which an attack on one NATO member will be considered an attack on all.
