The terrorist attack that took place in the capital of Mali on September 17 killed 77 people and injured 255, AFP reports. The main targets of the attack were the gendarmerie school and the international airport of Bamako.

According to Le Soir, most of the dead are students of the capital's gendarmerie school, who were at the training base during the attack. The victims also include security forces who tried to repel the attack. Malian authorities have not yet disclosed the exact number of dead and injured, but the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the country confirmed the presence of losses among gendarme cadets and military personnel.

According to preliminary information, the attack was carried out by a jihadist group that has become active in the region in recent years. The attackers used explosives and firearms to inflict maximum damage. Several hours after the incident, Malian security forces announced that they had brought the situation under control and were continuing to search for the militants involved in the attack.
