US President Donald Trump announced an agreement to meet in person with Vladimir Putin in Budapest to find ways to end the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Trump wrote this on his social media account, noting that he had just concluded a "very productive" phone conversation with the Russian leader.
During their conversation, Trump said Putin congratulated him and the United States on achieving peace in the Middle East – a reference to the recent Gaza deal, which Trump has touted as a diplomatic triumph.
"He said it could help end the war between Russia and Ukraine," – Trump quoted Putin’s words.
The leaders also discussed prospects for trade cooperation after the end of the conflict and agreed to a meeting of senior advisers – led by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on the Russian side – next week.
"Putin and I will then meet in Budapest to seek an end to the war," "Trump said, emphasizing the "great progress" in the negotiations.
Tomorrow, October 17, the American president will meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in the Oval Office to discuss the details of the call. This will be the second meeting between Trump and Zelenskyy in recent months, amid growing pressure from Kyiv on Washington for additional military assistance.
