The Trump administration is considering freezing the conflict on the current borders, proposing to create a buffer zone between Russia and Ukraine. According to The Telegraph, it is proposed to establish a demilitarized zone of about 1300 kilometers. Patrolling and security in this area could be entrusted to forces of the European Union and Great Britain, which, according to the administration, will stabilize the situation and exclude new conflicts.
Also under discussion is continuing arms deliveries to Ukraine, which U.S. officials say will prevent another outbreak of fighting. At the same time, Kyiv may be asked to abandon its attempts to regain lost territory and its ambitions to join NATO for the next 20 years, which could serve as a compromise for achieving short-term peace and stabilization in the region.
Such an initiative, if supported by the parties, would create conditions for a relative truce, but it also raises questions about the parties' commitments and the guarantees that would be needed for the long-term observance of the new status quo.
