US President Donald Trump made a statement that could signal the US administration's readiness to take new steps in relations with North Korea. During a conversation with representatives of the White House press pool, the head of state emphasized that Washington does not stop maintaining communication channels with Pyongyang. Moreover, Trump hinted at the possibility of personal contact with the leader of the DPRK Kim Jong-un, noting that such a scenario is not excluded in the future.
“We have a great relationship with him, and yes, some communication is maintained,” — the American leader emphasized, answering journalists’ questions.
According to him, at some point the parties may take concrete actions, although the statement has not yet provided any specifics.
Relations between the United States and the DPRK remain one of the most complex issues on the international stage. After a period of active negotiations in 2018-2019, when Trump and Kim Jong-un held several historic meetings, including a summit in Singapore and the demilitarized zone on the Korean Peninsula, the dialogue between the countries has noticeably slowed down. The main goal of those contacts was to discuss the DPRK’s denuclearization in exchange for sanctions relief and security guarantees. However, subsequent rounds of talks, notably in Hanoi in 2019, ended without significant agreements, which led to a cooling of relations.
Today, as Trump’s words suggest, Washington has not given up on the idea of maintaining ties with Pyongyang, despite the ongoing differences. Experts note that such rhetoric may be linked to the administration’s desire to demonstrate flexibility in its approach to the North Korean issue, especially against the backdrop of domestic political processes in the United States and the upcoming elections. However, the president left his foreign policy intentions unspecified, leaving room for interpretation.
According to South Korean media, Pyongyang conducted several ballistic missile tests in early 2025, raising concerns in Seoul and Washington. In response, the United States and its allies stepped up joint military exercises in the region, stressing the need to pressure North Korea to resume talks. However, Trump’s announcement of possible contact with Kim Jong-un may indicate an attempt to balance a hard line with a diplomatic approach. Some analysts suggest that Washington is seeking ways to resume dialogue to avoid escalating tensions in East Asia.
Meanwhile, Pyongyang itself has not yet made any official comments on Trump's words. The North Korean authorities traditionally take a wait-and-see approach, reacting to US initiatives only after careful analysis. Experts believe that Kim Jong-un may view such statements as an opportunity to strengthen his position in the international arena, especially in the context of economic difficulties caused by sanctions.
