US President Donald Trump confirmed that the American side is actively discussing territorial issues with Ukraine, including lands that Kyiv may lose as a result of the conflict with Russia. The head of the White House stated this during a briefing for journalists, emphasizing that Washington is striving for a speedy settlement of the situation in Eastern Europe.
According to Trump, a US delegation led by Special Envoy Steve Witkoff is currently in Russia. American representatives are negotiating an agreement to end the fighting in Ukraine.
“I am told that things are going well in Russia and that interaction on the Ukrainian issue is proceeding normally,” — the president noted, expressing satisfaction with the progress of diplomatic efforts.
He also added that he would be happy to meet personally with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss the details of the settlement.
One of the key topics of the negotiations, as Trump emphasized, is control over the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant, the largest nuclear facility in Europe, which has been under the control of Russian forces since 2022. The US President indicated that the fate of the plant and other strategic facilities is being actively discussed as part of the development of the final agreement.
"We are talking about who will get the power plant, who will get other territories. It is a difficult process, but the first step is a ceasefire," - He explained.
Trump also warned that failure of the talks would be a major blow to international efforts. “If a ceasefire agreement with Russia is not reached, it will be a great disappointment to the entire world,” the American leader said, stressing the importance of diplomatic success for his administration.
Negotiations to resolve the conflict in Ukraine have gained particular intensity since Trump returned to the White House. As Reuters reported, last week, American and Ukrainian representatives met in Saudi Arabia to discuss the framework for a possible ceasefire. During the consultations, Kyiv agreed to a US proposal to introduce a 30-day ceasefire, provided that Moscow would undertake similar commitments. Washington, in turn, resumed military aid supplies and intelligence sharing with Ukraine, which was an important step in restoring trust after the strained relations between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
